The SurfSUP is now in it's 5th year of being Alberta's first mobile SUP business offering fun, fitness, well-being and education.
We specialize in finding a paddleboard and accessories that are right for you. This is all we sell - so we will get it right! Two advantages using The SurfSUP is you get to try before you buy and having a lesson when you want it.
We took a family vacation to California to visit uncle Roch Frey of Multisports & auntie Heather Fuhr Ironman World Champ, who got us hooked on paddleboarding - the new craze of water fitness! When we got home to Calgary, Alberta the thought of "surfing" was constantly on our minds and we realized that this is something that can be done on any body of water; thus our family based business has come to life. A new addition to our Surf Ohana "family" is Bodie Shandro who trained us in Sun Peaks BC to become SUP Instructors for the Calgary Area. In June 2013, Harmony Dawn of Urban Ocean - 1 of 4 Master SUP Instructor Trainers for World Stand Up Paddleboard Association Academy of SUP Instruction came out and taught a Fitness/Yoga SUP course!
Stand Up Paddleboarding (SUP) is a traditional Hawaiian sport that will not only provide an amazing hobby, but also get people in the best shape of their lives. SUP’ing, as it is called by some, an abbreviation for Stand Up Paddleboarding, is a great way to build endurance, balance, core strength and overall physical and mental health.
We currently use the industry leading paddleboard equipment from Surftech and are awaiting Naish and Starboard stock as well. The average paddleboard ranges anywhere from 8 to 16 ft in length depending on if it is designed for surfing in the ocean, flat water paddling, or competition racing. Paddleboards are also wider and thicker than their traditional surfboard counterpart. This allows for increased stability as well as flotation, which is vital for balancing while standing up and paddling.
We are the FIRST in Alberta to have WSPA & ASI Fitness/Yoga Training! Kameil just completed the WSPA & ASI Fitness/Yoga Course along with her Can Fit Pro FIS certification to offer fitness to our clients. SUP Fitness is a hour long workout on a Stand Up Paddleboard! SUP Fitness increases body awareness, stability, core strength and endurance. Working out on water brings a whole new aspect to basic moves while having fun. Beginners to advanced students are all welcome - SUP 101 is needed in order to take our fitness class.
If you can balance standing up, you can paddleboard.
